The USO refinery station is a mobile (however painfully slow) deep space refinery for metal and mineral ores. The station is used when construction of planetary facilities or transporation to existing refineries is deemed too costly. Generally deployed in large and valueable mining fields and largely immobile, the station moves to a new field maybe three or four times in its career. The raw materials are transported to the station via miners or ore haulers, and the refined goods are shipped on bulk freighters or container ships. Refinery stations are self-contained small towns. Some employees have been known to never leave the station until the end of their contract, and a few families have spent years on the station. Closing a refinery is similar to wiping out an entire community. This facilities are often holding good legal trade routes.
